contemporary abstract artistBorn in 1973, Kimberley Steenson is a Canadian abstract artist based in Markham, Ontario.
She is a ‘self taught artist’ in purist sense of term: as she learned to paint by painting – an experience she describes as learning the ‘hard way’ through trial, error, continual research and fearless experimentation. She has brought her unique concepts and vision onto canvas through over 25 years of experience working in oil and acrylic mediums. Her art has evolved over time, shifting away from clearly representational works into engaging abstractions celebrating colour and internal rhythms, often under the influence of expressionistic style. This has been achieved by merging both traditional and innovative painting techniques to present inspired compositions respecting the landscapes of our raw natural world impacted by modern, eclectic urbanism.
Kimberley’s work consistently displays a distinct emphasis on employing textural effects seen through many layers of paint applied with brush or knife and punctuated with strong impasto surface profiles. These variations of texture are combined with the supporting presence of the most enticing elements of pure natural colours that often reference geological treasures the artist describes as ‘gifts from the earth.’ This approach provides a platform to showcase varying energy levels for suggesting perception to invite and impact the viewer, but allows the artwork the autonomy to present on its own merits.
Often commissioned for her artistic vision, Kimberley has created over 100 pieces that have been sold into private and corporate collections through Ontario, Manitoba, Quebec and Ireland.
Kimberley initiates her commissioned works by establishing the conceptual vision from her existing paintings. Her works are entirely original, so exact duplicates of sold pieces will not be reproduced, but requests for works similar in “spirit” are welcomed. Commonly requested are very large works, or working within a clients orientation specifications (vertical or horizontal dimension), but the artist is open to all requests that continue to support her established style.
Gallery style canvases (with 1.75” inch profile or depth) are the artist’s first choice to achieve a refined, modern style that best support her style of work. Artwork is professionally presented with finished sides in either a ‘wrap around’ affect or dark crisp edges. All pieces, whether in the gallery pages or commissioned, are sold wired and ‘ready to hang’ so no framing is required.
